Celebrating Freedom of Identity and Society’s Progression: A Discussion on William December Williams and the “Down Low” Culture.

Growing up, William December Williams was a sex symbol in the black community. He was every black woman’s fantasy, and every black man wanted to be as “cool” as him. However, his recent announcement has likely changed many people’s opinions. While some may not be accepting of his reveal, the backlash has been relatively kind to him, possibly due to his age of 80+. Perhaps this means our society is moving forward in its thinking, but unfortunately, we still have a long way to go, as evidenced by the criticism aimed at little Zion Wade.

As for me, I don’t care how Williams refers to himself/herself. I’m just glad that he is free and courageous enough to own his identity. It’s a personal journey, and everyone should have the freedom to live their life as they choose. No one should have to wait for permission to be happy, rich, or free. This is why I admire Magic Johnson and Dwayne Wade for supporting their children. Kids shouldn’t have to sacrifice their happiness to make others happy.

I suspect that many other men have done and continue to do what Williams has done, which is why we have the “down low” culture. He probably knew that he needed to work in Hollywood, which wouldn’t have allowed him to be a sex symbol with the truth looming in the forefront. However, I’m glad that he can now share his truth (if he wants to) and live the rest of his life as he chooses. It would be even better if people stopped needing to know and just allowed others to live with whomever they choose, assuming that all parties involved are consenting adults.
